Today, in the globalized world, I can find everything of relevance going on in the ether-world, but I cant' always associate it to the real-world constraints of time and location. We wanted to provide a place where people can share information about things that affect them where they live in their community. There is a lot of general information on the web. One of the first things I have to look for when I am searching for something is 'How far is this?', or 'Does this apply to my location?'.
Search engines and social networks are also unclear on that answer. If we use a specific location, they do ok, but when it comes to searching for something within a radius, you can't do that. Google tends to promote posts about 2-3 years out of date.
Recently, I came across a post on linked in about 'Nestle recalling baby food'. The post had been forwarded from one person to another on a social network. But, I couldn't tell where it was from. My first instinct as a mother was to forward it on. But, I took a minute to check, and it turned out that the post was about France. It wasn't relevant for any other country. It was highly relevant in France, where it could truly impact babies there.
Local Networks are the most ignored network on the web. But, along with the ubiquitous use of cell phones they are becoming the most important social network on smart-phones. Location is one of the most important aspect of our lives. Yet, it is supported only in a limited way by every search engine and social network. Let's change that.
