GE (NYSE: GE) is delivering an added level of energy security at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions that maintain energy to vital systems. In the event of a power grid disruption, GE technology and on-site engineering support will switch to battery back-up power—keeping the games running until power is restored.

“The world will be watching around the clock for more than four weeks. We’re going to be sure there is always something to see as we provide a safe environment for athletes and spectators,” said Adrian Corcoran, head of Venue Technology Services for the London 2012 Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). “Athletes, countries and fans wait four years for the excitement and human drama of the world’s premier sporting event, and we’re going to deliver an outstanding show.”

Over 15,000 athletes from more than 200 nations are expected for the London 2012 Games. The 28 days of competition offer more than 11 million tickets to events in 26 Olympic sports and 20 Paralympic sports.

GE’s UPS solutions will help deliver uninterrupted power for critical Games operations such as lighting, security, scoring systems, broadcasting, IT and telecommunications at each Olympic Venue. The complete “solutions-in-a-box” includes transformers, batteries, switchgear and plug-and-play connectivity. The systems’ compact design requires less space and also is easier to install and service. GE also will provide support staff.

“As a worldwide sponsor of the Games, GE is proud to play a key role in an event that unites the entire world,” said Tony Gale, general manager London 2012, GE. “Our UPS infrastructure is just one of the many solutions GE people are working on to help deliver energy, improve efficiency, minimize environmental impact and improve safety throughout these London Games.”

GE’s Leicester-based Digital Energy team has been working on the UPS plans and requirements with LOCOG for more than three years. In addition to UPS, the overall solution includes additional generation resources to sustainably supplement grid capacity.

“Olympic organizers have gone to great lengths to ensure these games are as sustainable as possible. We’re extending that spirit to the UPS systems as well,” Gale said. “GE already is making plans to help LOCOG relocate the Games’ UPS systems to new power-critical operations—such as hospitals, schools and key industrial sites—where they can continue to provide secure and safe power long after London’s Olympic flame is extinguished.”

GE developed the first static UPS in 1966 and has continued to deliver advanced performance and industry-leading energy efficiency for backup power management.
