Second in a Series of Tests Showcases Oracle’s Ability to Handle the Smart Grid “Data Deluge”

Oracle announced that Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management 2.0.1, running with Oracle Exadata Database Machine X2-2 and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud X2-2, processed 1 billion meter reads per hour.1

Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management also responded to 19.3 million requests for bill determinants per hour. Each request required the calculation of four bill determinants, equating to 77.2 million bill determinants calculated per hour.

The test used data from 5.5 million smart meters measuring consumption in 15-minute intervals.2

As utilities continue to roll out smart grid programs, they need scalable, high-performance technology infrastructures to process extremely high volumes of consumption data generated by smart meters. Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management running on Oracle Exadata helps utilities process data at unprecedented rates – turning data into real intelligence that improves operational efficiency across every department while enabling utilities to provide their customers with information that helps them monitor and manage their energy and water use.

Supporting Quote
“This test assures utilities that Oracle hardware and software – engineered to work together, and available today – can process the huge volumes of data arriving from interval reads and ensure the usability of the data to produce the accurate, timely bills customers expect. In combination with other tests we are running in this series, this illustrates Oracle’s outstanding ability to help utilities conquer the smart metering ‘data deluge, ’” said Linda Jackman, group vice president of Industry Strategy, Oracle Utilities.

1 In this test, a meter read measured consumption at a single meter during one interval. Processing involved validating, editing, estimating, and storing as a final measurement.

2 Each meter had two channels measuring consumption every 15 minutes and one channel measuring consumption once a day. In other words, each meter produced 5,760 reads per month.
