Simon Helfgott, MD, has been named the new physician editor of The Rheumatologist. Helfgott is director of education & fellowship training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. and will begin his role as editor of the American College of Rheumatology’s monthly newsmagazine in January 2012.
Dr. Helfgott has more than 15 years of editing experience including serving as the assistant to the editor for the New England Journal of Medicine’s Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also an active member of the American College of Rheumatology and has held a variety of key editing positions for ACR publications, including the ACR’s official journal, Arthritis & Rheumatism.
Dr. Helfgott is a graduate of McGill University School of Medicine. He also completed his internal medicine residency at McGill and was a fellow in rheumatology and immunology at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Helfgott has served on the BWH faculty for 25 years and has published over 60 articles, reviews and chapters.
Dr. Helfgott replaces David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, chief, Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, Duke University Medical Center, and director, Duke University Arthritis Center as editor of The Rheumatologist. Dr. Pisetsky has served as the physician editor of The Rheumatologist since its launch in 2006.
The Rheumatologist is an official publication of the ACR that reaches 11,500 rheumatologists, internists, orthopedic surgeons, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other health care professionals who practice, research, or teach in the field of rheumatology.
