This spring, the Atacama desert will experience a rare natural phenomenon known as the Desert in Bloom. The phenomenon occurs in September and October after winter rain and snow allow thousands of sleeping bulbs and seeds to bloom, flooding the Atacama desert with beautifully colourful flowers in springtime. This vividly colourful display lining the world’s most arid desert occurs nowhere else in the world and offers the unique opportunity to see native flower species including red, yellow and white Añañucas, Gold Thimbles, Azulillos, Amolanas and Retamos.
From September 10th to October 15th, Cascada Expediciones is offering a premium tour through the region, taking guests across the dusty desert lined with fields of flowers. An expert botanical guide accompanies guests and shows them the region’s best flora, parks and coastal areas, and exceptional views of the native flower clusters spreading out across the horizon.
Guests arrive in seaside town La Serena on day 1 and have the chance to relax in their 5• hotel, then spend days 2 and 3 soaking up the Desert in Bloom while driving along the Pan-American highway and the Chilean coast. Beautiful local villages are visited in addition to National Reserve Llanos del Challe, home to a coastal desert ecosystem and rare beautiful plant species. On Day 4 guests check out of their hotel and continue their onward journey, taking with them the unforgettable view of the scorched desert terrain with its carpet of colourful flowers, framed by the Andes mountain backdrop.
