The new units were originally developed for the New York City subway system because it needed window air conditioners that could cool electronic-control rooms all year around. DMC has expanded the line to include through the wall, roof-mount, split and mobile air conditioners that operate in extremely corrosive, dusty, hot, humid, explosive, low-ambient and vibrating applications for industries around the world.

Original Challenge: New York City's subway system's communications-control rooms produce so much heat that they require cooling year around. However, they are located in tunnels and other areas too dusty and corrosive to cool with outside air, even in the winter.

Making the challenge tougher: The communications rooms have no space inside or outside for roof-mount or split systems. Hence, the Transit Authority can utilize only through-the-wall ("window") models. Therefore, it turned to DMC's patented control technology to design window wall air conditioners that could cool in dusty areas during all four seasons, without adjustment.

A closer look: DMC then incorporated into all the air conditioners many features that would allow them to withstand extreme conditions. Unlike lighter-weight commercial and industrial units, DMC air conditioners all contain these tough features:

• Durability: DMC's makes all of its units with stainless-steel cabinets and extensive protection against a wide range of corrosive environments. In addition, it engineers them to tolerate sand and dust without clogging.

• Adaptability: With its patented adaptability to wide fluctuations in ambient temperature (131º to -40º), as well as extremely high altitudes, these air conditioners find few places too hot, too cold, or too high. To make them even more flexible, the units can be adapted to most electrical configurations around the world. DMC also adapts all models for hazardous locations if needed.

• Ease of maintenance: Since many industries require cooling to keep their key operations going (such as the MTA's control rooms, and furnaces in steel plants), even short failures of the air conditioning (or heating) can result in revenues, or even lives, lost. Therefore, DMC manufactures units that have only mechanical controls to both eliminate the delicacy of electronic controls and the need for special parts or training. DMC's patented control system requires significantly shorter maintenance times then other units, which allows personnel to focus attention and valuable resources elsewhere.

These features clearly work together to enable DMC harsh and hazardous-duty air conditioners to thrive in extreme conditions.

Durable Machinery Company, LLC (durablemachinery.com) designs and builds standardized heavy- duty climate control and filtration systems specifically for harsh environments. It engineers and manufactures all its HVAC equipment in its plant in Brooklyn, New York. DMC's equipment cools, heats and filters the air in plants, mines, and underground facilities, military installations and other harsh environments around the world.
