India had 4,430 megawatts of installed wind energy capacity at the year-end 2005, however the country plans to add around 5,000 megawatts within the coming five years. The country intends to double its wind power generation capacity by the year 2010, as it is seeking alternative fuels for gas, oil, and coal.
Wind power generation capacity in India increased by a record 48 percent in 2005, with the addition of above 1,430 megawatts of capacity. This growth has been supported by the speedy approvals of investments and tax breaks.
The Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Vilas Muttemwar, said that some obstacles must be overcome, so that the planned growth can be realized in this sector. This would include the development of turbine technologies to be used with low speed winds.
