Cyclists in the 2011 Tour de Cure race to stop diabetes on Aug. 20 will find something new in their sights along the ride this year – mobile health stations.
For diabetics who face the difficult challenge of regulating blood sugar at higher altitudes, staying healthy when competing is a life-saving priority. Recognizing the need to keep athletes safe, event organizers teamed with PODS of Boulder to place eight storage containers at regular intervals along the race route. Each mobile health station will be staffed with volunteers to provide first-aid, water, juice and snacks to participants in need of care.
“While all cyclists in the Tour de Cure may not have diabetes, those that do have this disease know how important it is to monitor their blood sugars at all times,” said John Cordova, territory manager at PODS of Boulder. “We are committed to keeping everyone healthy and strong so that they can continue to ride towards a cure for diabetes.”
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Tour de Cure which has raised millions of dollars to fund diabetes research and provide services to help make a difference to the nearly 24 million Americans who suffer from diabetes and over 57 million people with pre-diabetes.
