Carrentals.co.uk, the website which helps UK drivers source cheap car hire from over 50 top suppliers, has this week warned people about failing to report points on driving licences to insurers.
Due to car insurance costs continuing to increase, many people take the risk of not reporting accidents or incidents which have caused them to have points on their licences. What those drivers do not perhaps know is that they are legally required to report those details - and indeed any changes in their circumstances - when applying for insurance policies.
Any motorist who has previously been involved in an accident but not reported it or points incurred can find their insurer refusing to pay them on account of holding back information. As such the driver's policy becomes void leaving the driver without insurance cover - a criminal offence in the UK.
Gareth Robinson, Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, comments: “While we understand that car insurance is a pricey thing these days, it is nonetheless vital that people tell insurers about points if they do have them on their licences."
“We want people to be aware that if they get into an accident and their insurance policy becomes void they are going to end up liable for the costs incurred - to cars, property, for medical treatment to other people's injuries and so on - not to mention legal fees. They can also end up with added points on their licence and a hefty fine for uninsured driving - so while saving some money might look attractive at first, not reporting points to insurers really can leave you counting the cost in the longer term.”
