Roadmap to Secure Control Systems in the Chemical Sector - CoverEnergetics Incorporated supported several critical U.S. Department of Homeland Security and chemical industry initiatives over the past year in an effort to improve cybersecurity in the Chemical Sector. Energetics first contributed to this effort in 2009 through the development of a comprehensive public-private strategic plan, the Roadmap to Secure Control Systems in the Chemical Sector.
The 2009 roadmap identifies goals, challenges, priorities, and milestones for improving the security of the industrial control systems (ICS) used widely in chemical manufacturing. A broad range of Chemical Sector asset owners and operators, control system vendors, system integrators, and researchers, and other stakeholders contributed to the roadmap. Contributors can use the roadmap to coordinate mutually supporting activities with their government partners.
In July 2010, DHS hosted a cross-sector ICS security workshop in Arlington, Virginia with facilitation and material production support from Energetics. The one-day workshop brought together control systems security experts from across the country and the 18 critical infrastructure sectors to identify opportunities to secure ICS in an increasingly interconnected critical infrastructure environment. The workshop identified near-term activities for participating sector representatives to leverage when securing ICS in their critical infrastructure sectors.
In December 2010, DHS partnered with chemical industry owners and operators and the Chemical Sector Coordinating Council to form the Roadmap Implementation Working Group. As part of the first essential step of roadmap implementation, the Working Group identified a set of milestones that will raise security awareness across the sector and collected a wealth of training and reference information to assist owners and operators in addressing ICS security. The Working Group is now attending owner and operator, vendor, and government conferences to deliver presentations and distribute awareness materials via DVD about the sector’s work in this area. Energetics (energetics.com) is playing a comprehensive support role in these efforts including research, writing, graphics development, and administrative coordination.
