The SMART 680i3 interactive whiteboard system combines the simplicity of a whiteboard with a boom-mounted, short-throw projector and control panel. This integrated system adds flexibility and efficiency to the classroom by allowing teachers and students to simply touch the interactive whiteboard surface to access and control a computer or other multimedia devices.
Dan Marshall, Specialized Academic Instructor, said,“For the students with disabilities the pure touch interactive nature of the SMART Board technology is magic. As soon as the SMART Board is turned on, all of our students gather around in anticipation. For students with autism, the SMART Board provides a dimension that never existed before because they now participate in activities without prompt dependency. The prompt dependency or “repeat after me...” strategy is typically needed during language activities to encourage participation from autistic students. However, the SMART Board “magically” stimulates meaningful, spontaneous and unprompted communication.
Additionally, Marshall stated,“Students with visual and fine motor challenges, use the SMART Board with great confidence as evidenced by their willingness to put their hands all over it. When called upon, students race to the board. Behavior issues are virtually non-existent, when the SMART Board is in use. We feel we are just scratching the surface on how the SMART Board can help accommodate the educational needs of students with disabilities. With our educational plans being highly individualized, the SMART Board is the single most important equipment in the classroom.”
One of CompView’s factory trained technicians installed the SMART Board and their Poway, CA based SMART certified trainer provided the training for the Special Education Department’s teachers and students. The department utilizes the SMART Board for teaching everything from life skills training to functional academics. Marshall noted “The most impressive part of the learning process was how quickly the students were able to master the basics. Every class on campus should have a SMART Board, especially the classes that serve students with disabilities.”
