AIA Tampa Bay is the Tampa Bay chapter of the American Institute of Architects; according to their website, the AIA is a professional association for architects and those in the architecture field that is dedicated to its members and the quality of the built environment in Tampa Bay. The Tampa Bay chapter represents approximately 650 members in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and Pasco Counties. The AIA provides programs and services including educational programs, design competitions, community service programs and serves as the united voice of the architecture profession. The Mayor’s Reception was an invitation only AIA event that recognized Tampa Mayor, Bob Buckhorn, and Tampa City Council members for their contributing efforts in the restoration of many historic buildings in Tampa. The event was held at Sanctuary Suites in Tampa Heights, which was one of the first suburbs in Tampa; it was developed more than 100 years ago. The Sanctuary is one of the few surviving examples of turn of the century Greek Revival architecture and is one of the many buildings that AIA, Buckhorn and City Council members invested efforts into renovating.
