NewswireTODAY - /newswire/ - Hoffman Estates, IL, United States, 2011/05/18 - On May 2, Rolls-Royce held the grand opening event for its new 180,000-square-foot “Crosspointe” plant, located near Petersburg, Virginia.

As the company’s largest U.S. manufacturing facility, the plant has been an exciting undertaking—one which will eventually create an estimated 500 new jobs.

The facility also encompasses the Commonwealth Center of Advanced Manufacturing—an R&D venture on behalf of Rolls-Royce, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.

To machine the aircraft engine discs that make up the factory’s primary production, the facility will employ three DMC 125 FD machines. These were on full display at the grand opening event, as Jim Guyette, President and CEO of Rolls-Royce North America, and Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell pressed the cycle start button on the machine and the audience watched it cut the plant’s first disk.

Media in attendance had plenty of photo opportunities as Guyette and Governor McDonnell spoke in front of the machines. Ellison and DMG / Mori Seiki USA representatives were also at the event.
