Google New York volunteers will join Women’s eNews and Global Press Institute to aid training of up to 25 women from local ethnic media and the blogging community to better report on gender justice themes connecting local communities in New York to international news issues.

“Women’s eNews is thrilled to be supported by GoogleServe on this important project to empower of New York City women in the diaspora” said Rita Henley Jensen, Women’s eNews’ founder and editor in chief. “Our mission is to deliver the news and information women need to leverage their power. This extraordinary partnership with Global Press Institute and GoogleServe is an opportunity to further Women’s eNews’ capacity in an extremely significant way.”

Six women from the training session will become writers on retainer for a special series published by Women’s eNews providing commentary and reaction on articles published from their country of origin by both Women’s eNews and Global Press Institute.

Global Connect! creates an opportunity for local media and writers to improve their knowledge and sensitivity in reporting on gender justice issues. The training will strengthen connections between local and the global communities through Women’s eNews and Global Press Institutes international news desks and bring issues effecting women’s participation in society to the forefront of reporting.

The training will be led by Cristi Hegranes, founder of Global Press Institute and a Women’s eNews 21 Leaders for the 21st Century from 2008 and Juhie Bhatia Women’s eNews’ managing editor. “Global Press Institute trains and employs women in developing countries to be journalists. This is a unique opportunity to connect women of the diaspora with women in their home countries. Together they will tell powerful stories that we hope will provoke local and global change,” said Hegranes.

GoogleServe will provide technical training using Google Applications to write, edit and deliver reporting and to allow all women in the training to continue to amplify their voices in the community and online after the event.

Women wishing to apply for the program can fill out an online application form at womensenews.org/global-connect.
