Bike Revolution Ltd, today announced the launch of the Bike Revolution Canada. The free bicycle registration and anti-theft platform joins forces with Bike Registry Canada to provide the only Canadian national bicycle registration database in the country.
The new service offers greater features and services for Canadian cyclists to protect and recover their bicycles. Along with greater geographic coverage, Bike Revolution uses technology in the form of scannable tags, mobile apps and social media networks to deter bike theft and, in the case of theft, aid in recovery of the bike.
Working with the public and existing law enforcement agencies and stolen bike sites across the country, the new service aims to increase the amount of recovered stolen bikes while significantly increasing bicycle registrations.
Cyclists can register their bikes for free on the website, and for even greater protection they can purchase a Bike Revolution Bike ID Kit, which includes three Pulse ID tags. A Pulse ID tag is a unique, tamper-resistant and weatherproof ID tag which includes a scannable QR code (2D barcode) linked to the bike, and used to identify a bike’s ownership.
The tags are a visible deterrent and are the first phase in the development of innovative security solutions offered by Bike Revolution. The company is expanding the service into the US in late April, providing cyclists with even greater coverage and access to the Bike Revolution Bike ID Kits. Even if a bike is stolen in Calgary, the bike can still be traced if spotted or scanned in Minneapolis.
With just a smartphone and any free, 2D barcode scanning mobile app, a tagged bike can be scanned by the police or the general public. The tags are linked to the registered bike’s owner in the secure Bike Revolution database. When a stolen bike is reported by the owner, or detected through a tag scan, Bike Revolution notifies the owner and uses social networking tools to spread the word locally. The secure database doesn’t share any personal information in the process.
Victims of bike theft can also send out Stolen Bike Alerts on Facebook and Twitter to local authorities, bike shops, cycling clubs and Bike Revolution’s local fans and followers. While not meant to replace the efforts of the law enforcement community, this unique bicycle registration service offers a cyclist one more way to proactively protect his bike.
“A key differentiator with our program is the accessibility of the web platform – anyone can register their bike, list a stolen bike, access the database of stolen bikes and send out localized alerts for free to their communities. The scannable Pulse ID tags allow the general public and police to know the status of a bike simply by scanning it with their smartphone using a free mobile app,” said Briand Beausoleil, spokesman for Bike Revolution. “No expensive readers, costly admin time or money is needed and no personal details are shared. With a simplified, technology-based process, and the new Bicycle ID Kit we are confident that bike registrations and bike recovery will begin to grow in Canada, while bike theft decreases.”
Bikeregistrycanada.com was first launched in June 2005. The founder Katie Renwick found that while many police departments across Canada offered a bike registration service in their own district, no system existed to connect one local registry with another in the same region.
“If a bike was stolen in the regional municipality of Durham, Ont., for example, but found somewhere else in Greater Toronto, there was no way to trace the bike back. Unclaimed bikes ended up languishing in police property rooms,”Katie Renwick relates,“and eventually would be sold at auction. People were not getting their bikes back.
Working with Bike Revolution’s global platform offers Canadian cyclists much greater coverage, which will only help strengthen our service and help fight bicycle crime.”
