Dan Rather, Maria Hinojosa, Malaak Compton-Rock, Loreen Arbus, Celebrate Women's Leadership
Correspondent Dan Rather and Producer Maria Hinojosa join media agenda-setters and previous Women’s eNews 21 Leaders for the 21st Century honorees Malaak Compton-Rock and Loreen Arbus. International activist philanthropist Swanee Hunt will present the Ida B. Wells Award for Bravery in Journalism.
Michelle Bachelet, the first under-secretary-general and executive director of UN Women, launched in January, will receive special Newsmaker of the Decade recognition. A pediatrician and a survivor of torture under Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, Bachelet has carried with her a profound understanding of women’s concerns and the political will to address them.
Susan Robinson King, vice president and director of Journalism Initiative for the Carnegie Corporation of New York, will emcee the event held at the Jumeirah Essex House on New York’s Central Park South.
The Women’s eNews 21 Leaders honorees include anti-sex trafficking activists, extraordinary individuals focused in improving the lives of girls in the U.S. and worldwide, change-makers improving women’s health care and those developing leadership among the next generation. The growing collaborative of Women’s eNews 21 Leaders (womensenews.org) now include women and men from half of the nation’s states and 19 countries.
The 21 Leaders for the 21st Century 2011 Gala honorees include Maile M. Zambuto, head of Mariska Hargity’s foundation for sex assault survivors, and grassroots activist for Muslim women, Robina Niaz. They join outstanding leaders from previous years: Lily Ledbetter and two Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, Wangari Maathai and Shirin Ebadi.
