Many women, especially African-American women, have an obsession with their hair. Collectively, black women spend over $1 billion on hair care products, according to industry reports. Many women share that they sit in salon chairs across the U.S. for over 100 hours each year.
V. Woods, founder and CEO of My Salon Scoop, wanted to find a way to help ease one frustration, the trial-and-error process of finding a new hair salon, for women by leveraging technology.
Celebrating its second year online on April 15, 2011, MySalonScoop.com connects clients and stylists together online to improve the salon experience for both groups. “I went from just being another frustrated hair salon client to an entrepreneur,” Woods said.
The special relationship between hair stylists and clients has recently been highlighted on reality television shows like “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Using an analogy to romantic dating, Woods calls My Salon Scoop "the ultimate beauty matchmaker.”
Featuring advice from beauty pros and celebrity hair stylists such as Ellin LaVar, Anthony Dickey and Kim Kimble, My Salon Scoop educates women about new products, healthy hair practices and salon etiquette. In addition, My Salon Scoop encourages clients to post reviews for salons and hair salons to showcase their services to clients in their salon directory.
“We strive to differentiate ourselves from other online beauty magazines and directories by sharing the voice of both the clients and stylists in every service that we offer,” Woods explained.
In addition to publishing the online magazine, My Salon Scoop offers various marketing consulting services and educational products to hair salons. In March, the Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership, a not-for-profit organization that supports inner city economic development through entrepreneurship in New Jersey, named My Salon Scoop as a finalist in their 2011 business plan competition.
To commemorate the 2nd anniversary, My Salon Scoop has partnered with eco-friendly makeup company Lamik Beauty.
