Minneapolis, MN, United States, 2011/04/13 - Sound80 is widely credited with being the first to record digital audio for commercial purposes. As the industry has grown, so has the company offering signatory, duplication and trafficking. It has also pioneered by developing e-learning expertise.

Nestled above the city in a 36th floor office with panoramic views, Sound80 carries on a highly specialized business crucial to the advertising industry, but goes almost completely unnoticed by the public eye. In fact, their services are so specialized, that they are only one of a handful of companies in the country serving this niche.
Sound80 is an audio recording studio, union signatory, video and audio duplication, and trafficking organization (and more) with a strong history to stand on – a rare thing in an industry that changes almost every year. The business has sustained itself for over 40 by constantly adopting and embracing new technologies and new markets. Making Sound80 as vibrant and aligned with the industry as a start-up.
In 1969, long before iPods, CDs, or computers even, Tom Jung and Herb Pilhofer and their newly founded Sound80 were pioneers in the art of digital recording. Together they developed state-of-the-art digital recording equipment and in the studio, they recorded the likes of Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and Prince among others. Securing its place in Minnesota and audio history books (it’s even included in a display at the Minnesota History Center) and winning Grammys along the way.
In those early days, their staff included a young receptionist named Jan Erickson. As the business grew and changed, Jan learned and grew along with it, moving from receptionist to a principal in the organization. And in 1984, Herb was ready to move on and he saw his heir apparent in Jan.
Jan is known for her willingness to take risks and her focus on being unique. Under Jan’s ownership, the business has blossomed into a full service recording studio plus, signatory services, video and audio duplication and trafficking. And the newest addition to roster is translating the skills they have developed over the years to the relatively new elearning industry.
One thing that will never change at Sound80, however, is an “old fashioned” sense of personalized customer service. Calls are answered by real people and clients are greeted with an unpretentious nature inherent to the company. “Integrity is the core of Sound80” says Jan. “We stand by our work and we stand by our promises. People who know us know we’re there to support them.”
