• Work has begun on the new 50 MW Chucas plant.
• The project will increase Enel Green Power’s installed capacity in the country to 105 MW.

The new plant, named Chucas, will have an installed capacity of 50 MW, and once fully up and running, will generate around 219 million kWh/year, equal to the annual consumption of over 81 thousand households and avoiding the emission of over 150 thousand metric tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.

Enel Green Power, the Enel Group company that focuses on renewable energy, expects to complete the plant by mid-2013, which will raise the company’s installed capacity in Costa Rica to 105 MW.

Francesco Starace, CEO of Enel Green Power, said: “This second plant, coming after the Palo Viejo hydroelectric plant in Guatemala, which is currently under construction, is a tangible sign of Enel Green Power’s growth in Latin America and in hydroelectric technology, which is one of the pillars of growth on this continent.”

Enel Green Power operates in Central and South America through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Latino America, which runs 33 plants using renewable resources in Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, Chile and Brazil, for a total installed capacity of 669 MW.

Hydroelectric power is the main focus of investment in the region for Enel Green Power, which manages more than 31 plants in 6 countries.

The company has a 24 MW wind power plant in Costa Rica and will build three more in Brazil for a total installed capacity of 90 MW.

With its long experience in the field of geothermal power, Enel Green Power (enel.com) is developing new opportunities in this sector. In Chile, in particular, the company is exploring several concessions that have potential to provide well over 100 MW of electricity.
