On the first day of Women’s History Month Women’s eNews is launching Opening the Way: A Women’s History Walk as a cell phone tour and an internet-based audio and video experience honoring 21 women in downtown Manhattan.
The moving stories of women’s lives in New York from the 18th century to the service women who attended the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks are now accessible at the finger tips of locals, tourists and women’s history fans worldwide.
Actress Kathleen Turner, activist Gloria Steinem and former WNBC-TV news anchor Carol Jenkins are amongst the present day leaders bringing alive the words of pioneer writers, agitators, abolitionists, and suffragists through the audio and video tour.
Co-creators of the tour Betsy Wade and Jim Boylan said of the new platform:
“The technology of the 21st century is a huge help in the pursuit of history. It puts into our ears the words of our foremothers as if they were beside us here on streets where they walked, worked and stirred things up. The voices of today's feminists show vividly how things got changed by those gutsy women. We can feel what our tasks are."
The Opening the Way website leads visitors through the women on the tour with options to listen to recordings and view video footage. The audio files are also available as an 16-part podcast in the Apple store.
Women’s eNews (womensenews.org) will lead a tour for 40 guests on March 27, 2011 as part of their Women’s History Month events program.
