“I’m in the civil discourse business, to take a line from Jim Lehrer,” declared Richard Raphael, the founder of sociopolitical network. Jim Lehrer is an American journalist and news anchor for PBS Newshour. Gadflye.com connects people and politics in a way that encourages political engagement and public discourse.
“Facebook is a global social utility whose mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Our mission is to help people share political ideas (of local, state, national, and global significance) so they feel and believe they are politically-connected,” says Christopher “Chris” Collado of Gadflye Operations. Political ideas and the related discussions are critical to freedom and democracy. The scatter of (political) public discussions (unintentional or not) across many websites (including the political and social oriented) can be detrimental to free speech and freedom. Internet technology (like the social network services of Gadflye.com) make public discourse easier.
“There should be a keeper of political public discussions,” according to Chethanna Raphael, a Gadflye Intern, “traditional news is not the keeper of (political) public discourse; Facebook is not the keeper of (political) public discourse. Gadflye’s purpose is to bring people together for (political) public discourse that relate to many of the pressing issues of today, in a single social network environment. There are a lot of good public discussions occurring between people from all walks of life; those discussions are scattered across the boundless mass of the Internet within forums of popular and not so notorious social networks services and websites. Gadflye.com wants to ensure that public discourse is included in the various political debates.”
