PTFE smoothbore hose was the original PTFE hose design, introduced in 1955 for automotive and military applications and is now popularly used in industrial, chemical, pharmaceutical, foodstuffs and many general purpose applications throughout the world.

Many applications require that smoothbore PTFE hose should have an outer cover of flexible plastic, or rubber, the most popular being a coloured PVC cover allowing text to be written on the hose, and providing effective braid protection.
