Intellectual property consulting and patent brokering firm AmiCOUR IP Group today announced it has hired entrepreneur Art Cohen to open a new Silicon Valley location. Cohen was founder and CEO of Aerielle Inc., developers of miniature FM transmitter technology widely used to broadcast digital music into car radios. Aerielle’s patented technology was licensed worldwide and is sold in popular “Aerielle Enabled” FM transmitter products at Best Buy, Fry’s, HH Greg, and Wal-Mart.
Prior to his success in consumer products and patent licensing, Cohen held key positions at Oracle Corporation and Apple Computer. His prophetic ability to match new ideas with consumer demand was demonstrated early in life. Cohen revealed, “At Drexel University, we were asked to predict what a personal computer would look like in fifteen years. My team of student futurists were finalists in a national competition sponsored by Apple Computer judged by luminaries Steve Woznaik, Alan Kay, and Ray Bradbury. We had to wait to learn we were right, but it was a very interesting project.” Cohen later joined Apple where many of his early predictions came true; eventually leaving to focus on his new transmitter technology. At about the same time, Apple was considering its own ideas to address the emerging market for digital music players created by the new Sonic Blue “Rio” and RCA “Lyra” players.
The new AmiCOUR IP Group location in Cupertino will serve the intellectual property needs of patent law firms and technology based companies of all sizes, according to Cohen. “We have one of the broadest IP service offerings in the industry, " he explained, adding, “and, we have the capability to handle early stage inventors with a single idea or large corporations with large patent portfolios. I look forward to delivering our patent and trademark services to our growing West Coast and Asian family of clients.”
“Art is exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to patents and IP management strategies, ” according to Scott Bechtel, AmiCOUR’s managing partner and CEO. He added, “This region is the most demanding IP services market in the world, but also one of the most dynamic and rewarding. Our search team required candidates to demonstrate patent licensing and litigation experience, a broad engineering and scientific background, and proven entrepreneurship success. Art is also a successful inventor. Our efforts paid off and we’re all genuinely excited that Art is becoming part of the Group. He is an IP and licensing luminary with a proven track record, including taking technology all the way from the idea stage to the shelves of Wal-Mart.”
AmiCOUR’s announcement comes just two weeks before the Licensing Executives Society’s Winter Meeting in San Jose, where the Society will focus its meeting theme on high technology. AmiCOUR executives play a leadership role in the Society’s High Technology Sector, which comprises almost a third of its total membership. AmiCOUR IP Group (amicourip.com) provides IP consultants, damages experts, and royalty auditors. The company also operates an exclusive licensing, brokerage, and early stage investment group. Other locations include Denver, Colorado, and Lafayette, Indiana, with plans to open an NY Metro area location later in the spring.
