Carrboro, NC, United States, 2011/01/20 - Carrboro Coffee Roasters was a winner in the coffee category at the inaugural Good Food Awards, held in San Francisco on January 14.

Legendary chef, author and fair food activist Alice Waters was the host of the ceremony.
The awards are a San Francisco-based initiative from Seedling Projects ( the folks that brought you the Slow Food Movement) that recognize food that is both delicious and responsibly produced.
Carrboro Coffee Roasters owner Scott Conary, who also owns Open Eye Cafe and Caffe Driade shops in Chapel Hill, NC, submitted his El Aguacate coffee -- grown in Honduras by farmer Tomas Sosa Calderon. He says the coffee is lushly acidic and has a caramel sweetness.
To qualify for entry in the coffee category, roasters had to emphasize fairness and transparency from seed to cup, and they had to certify that their coffee beans are grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides.
Food-industry giants from across the nation judged the products, selecting 10 winners in the coffee category from out of over 150 entries from across the country. To showcase winners among the broader food-loving public, there was a Good Food Marketplace on January 15, 2011. Visitors to the marketplace were invited to taste the award-winning foods surrounded by the spectacular Saturday Farmers’ Market at San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building.
