LANXESS set up new Sustainable Leather Management program
Specialty chemicals group LANXESS will be presenting a comprehensive range of products for the manufacture of shoe upper, upholstery, bag and gloving leathers at the India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, India, from January 31 to February 3, 2011. Jürgen Hackenbroich, regional head of the Leather business unit for Asia Pacific, says: “Sustainability is our top priority when developing new products. And by that we mean not just minimizing waste, maximizing product safety and ensuring that we comply with REACH. We also develop modern, energy-saving processes that conserve natural resources and avoid the use of critical raw materials.”
Sustainability is not simply a trend. It is becoming more and more important in the leather business. The demand for ecological leather is increasing. The experts in LANXESS’ Leather business unit have translated these needs into guiding principles for the leather manufacturing process and set up the new Sustainable Leather Management program. Hackenbroich explains: “The new long-term program is a logical consequence of what we successfully started in the past. We have already focused on environmental needs and developed a number of chemical and technological solutions which have helped improve the environmental footprint of leather.” Examples are Euderm X-Grade for waste reduction, Aquaderm X-Shield for lifetime extension and Levotan X-Cel for lightweight leather.
LANXESS will present a new generation of eutectic preservatives for wet blue, wet white and vegetable leathers at the IILF. Preventol U-Tec A and Preventol U-Tec G are water and salt-free. Because of their special formulation and high eutectic concentrations, they cover a broad spectrum of activity.
LANXESS has developed the unique and patented Levotan LB, a bio-mimetic polymer softening product, which is increasingly replacing conventional fatliquors giving substantial technical and ecological advantages. Levotan LB is a highly versatile product that permits the cost-effective manufacture of all common articles made from wet blue or wet white leather. The specific gravity is lower than that of leathers fatliquored with conventional products, resulting in end products that are lightweight, low-density and soft, yet still hard-wearing.
In the finishing sector, LANXESS’ innovative Euderm X-Grade system makes it possible to conceal small to medium-sized hide defects perfectly. The filling effect is achieved by means of special microcapsules that expand when subjected to high temperatures during plating or embossing.
All the leather goods displayed on the LANXESS stand at the fair are colored with either Euderm pigments or Levaderm dyestuffs. These colorants are free of heavy metals, NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone) and casein. The Baykanol Lickers used for fatliquoring contain no APEO (alkylphenol ethoxylate).
LANXESS also provides its customers with information on upcoming color and fashion trends, thereby giving them a distinct competitive advantage. A collection of leather samples has been specially prepared to illustrate the appearance, feel and overall impression of the new leather trends for the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 season. The collection, which will be on display at LANXESS’ stand at the IILF, also includes recipes and practical advice on processing so that tanners can prepare themselves for the new trends.
The Leather business unit achieves over 40 percent of its sales in Asia. It is part of LANXESS’ Performance Chemicals segment, which posted sales of EUR 1,530 million in fiscal 2009.
