RFID solution provider, FEC International (M) Sdn. Bhd. has announced official sales of tyre management system called “e-Tyre Manager”, by incorporating the RFID technology. This system brings great benefits for the environment, economy, safety aspects and visibility by installing RFID tag in an individual tyre, hence achieving a total life management of the tyre.
Managing tyre information used to be very complex and required a lot of work. For instance, human error caused by manual work when taking measurement data to transferring to PC is inevitable in the conventional method of inspection. Moreover, individual tyre information is unmanageable with old method and it is very difficult to understand the history of each tyre. On top of that, the situation gets more serious when accidents happened due to poor tyre conditions.
“e-Tyre Manager” aims to achieve an easy life cycle management on individual tyre by using the RFID technology and to boost improvement in such situation.
System structure
This system consists of RFID patch tag, special tyre probe, RFID handheld, and e-Tyre software.
The RFID tyre patch tag is embedded with an EPC C1 Gen2 compliance chip where the ID information of the tag can be obtained even when the tyre is fixed onto the vehicle. The RFID technology used is called passive tag where the product is battery-less and does not require any battery replacement.
The tyre tread and pressure can be measured using only a device called “tyre probe” where the measured data can be automatically transmitted to a PDA or any other kind of handy terminal via Bluetooth. A special type of tyre probe use to measure OTR (Off-The-Road) tyre (i.e. construction site truck tyre) is also available.
These RFID patch tag and tyre probe are manufactured by a company named Translogik which is based in the UK and FEC is their sole distributor for ASEAN countries, Japan and Korea.
The RFID handheld reader is equipped with function that enables wireless communication between RFID patch tag and tyre probe. With our own developed software, the measured data for each individual tyre will be stored.
Work procedure
The tyre inspection procedures are very simple as listed below:
1. Configure the vehicle, tyre, and RFID patch tag information in the PC;
2. Transfer all saved data PC to RFID handheld reader;
3. Tyre inspection work;
3-1. Get tyre patch ID using RFID handheld reader.
3-2. Measure tyre tread and pressure using tyre probe.
3-3. Insert observation and the required future action.
4. Synchronize the data inside RFID handheld reader with PC;
5. Reports and analysis result can be generated from PC.
Information recorded by the handheld reader during tyre inspection is then downloaded into the PC by synchronizing with the PC. The data recorded provide excellent analytical information about the fleet, comprehensive view on the fleet tyre details like fleet tyre profiles and conditions, tyre costing including retreading cost, tyre performance based on tyre brand and model and etc.
In addition, not only the tyre inspection but maintenance, repair history and disposal (i.e. the total life of the tyre) is possible to be managed with this system.

Future development
FEC (fecinc.com.my) with collaboration of Malaysian logistics companies have completed pilot tests of the system. Results obtained from the pilot tests has confirmed that this system indeed has improved the operation efficiency of the tyre and the vehicle safety.
In the future, FEC plans to expand the business development of this system not only in Malaysia but also globally.
