San Diego, CA, United States, 2010/10/26 - The former Padres infielder, who now plays professionally for Japan’s Yomiuri Giants, will direct the 8-week training program from November to January.
Young athletes with dreams of going into professional baseball will get invaluable training this winter: Gonzalez Sports Academy (GSA), a state-of-the-art multi-training sports facility, will hold an 8-week winter training camp lead by former San Diego Padres player Edgar Gonzalez, for baseball athletes, ages 14 years and older.
Beginning mid-November, the Baseball Elite Program will be held two days a week, for three hours a day, and teach multiple skills and techniques professional athletes do to get ready for the baseball season.
As the program coordinator, Edgar, who currently plays professionally for Japan’s Yomiuri Giants, will focus his training on stretching, core workouts, speed and agility, strength, baseball skills and overall training.
“Gonzalez Sports Academy is putting on this program because it is one of our goals to give more San Diego kids the tools they need to receive sports scholarships or go onto play professional baseball,” said Edgar. “Other professional athletes, who will be helping me with the program, and I, want to share the knowledge that has helped us prosper in our baseball careers, with today’s youth.”
The Program is meant to be helpful for individuals ages 14 and up, who have played baseball regularly and are hoping to receive a baseball scholarship, and eventually sign a contract in the minor/major leagues.
“The opportunity to train and be instructed by professional athletes is not something that every kid has in his youth,” said Edgar. “This type of guidance and program is something I wish I had been able to take part in when I was growing up."
The cost of the program is $500 for eight sessions, and $950 for 16 sessions.
Interested participants may do a trial-run of the program on the first day and sign-up afterwards if they choose to take more training sessions.
“We are going to push every athlete to the edge and get him to reach his maximum potential. That way, when baseball season rolls around, these kids will have an added edge on their competition,” said Edgar. “This is the same program that helped Adrian and I get to where we are in our professional baseball careers, so I hope this training program is viewed as an investment towards a successful future.”
On top of the regular training regimen, the Baseball Elite Program will consist of various elements, such as nutrition, with a healthy protein shake given to participants on a daily basis.
