Kemin Health, L.C., creator of FloraGLO®, the world’s leading lutein brand, and DSM Nutritional Products, a premium ingredient supplier to producers of foods, beverages, and dietary supplements, will present exciting new research demonstrating the bioavailability of FloraGLO Lutein with Actilease technology. The importance of using ingredients with clinically proven benefits as a common sense “insurance policy” to maintain a manufacturer’s brand equity and reputation will also be discussed.
At the SupplySide West Expo in Las Vegas, NV, new research will be introduced demonstrating why all lutein ingredients are not the same. Kemin Technical Services Manager, Diane Alexander, Ph.D., and DSM Director of Technical Marketing, Jean-Claude Tritsch, Ph.D., will present “Why Your Lutein Source Matters” at 9:30 AM on Thursday, October 21st in Sands 105 conference room at the Sands Convention Center. All SupplySide West attendees are welcome to attend.
Standardized crystalline ingredients or plant extracts, such as lutein, are not readily absorbed by the body. Further formulation is required, and lutein ingredient manufacturers use different processes to enrobe the lutein in order for it to be released into the body. Data indicates that these different processes can have a significant impact on the bioavailability of the lutein ingredient and may hinder the bioavailability of the ingredient. Lutein bioavailability—the delivery of the ingredient to the beneficial sites of action - including the macula, where lutein is quantified as macular pigment optical density (“MPOD”) is essential for eye health. Research supports that MPOD has the potential to become a commonly tested biomarker in the assessment of visual function and the risk for eye disease.. Awareness of MPOD and the technology used for its measurement are growing among eye care practitioners and consumers.
FloraGLO Lutein beadlets utilize Actilease® beadlet technology, a branded, patented technology from DSM that formulates FloraGLO Lutein into micro-sized particles that are protected in a water-soluble shell. Published research shows that FloraGLO Lutein, with Actilease® Technology, is clinically proven to be absorbed by the body into the bloodstream and, more importantly, deposited into the macula increasing MPOD. A lutein supplier lacking its own bioavailability data and making structure/function claims based upon clinical studies conducted with other sources of lutein, such as FloraGLO, may not have the required substantiation for claims of product benefits if its lutein is not bioavailable
“It is important for manufacturers to deliver on their promised health benefits on product labeling and formulate with a quality lutein ingredient that can assure delivery to beneficial sites of action,” says Heather Richardson, FloraGLO Product Manager for Kemin Health. “The quality of a supplement brand and its ingredients, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, is critical as doctors are embracing new technology to measure and monitor MPOD levels in their patients,” adds Richardson.
