Makati City is the financial center of the Philippines and one of the major commercial and economic hubs in Asia. A rapidly increasing number of skyscrapers rise into the sky in this area, while the deployment of optical fiber cables under the streets is at a relatively slow speed. As more and more users expect high-speed Internet at home, at work, or even on the go, telecommunications companies find it hard to meet the bandwidth consumption needs with their current network infrastructure. To quench the thirst for bandwidth of the Makati City, a metropolitan Wi-Fi network was launched using 4ipnet’s high-power multi-radio outdoor access points, wireless last-mile CPE, and high-capacity WLAN controllers.
The deployment was implemented by a nationwide wireless Internet service provider (WISP) in the Philippines. After testing multiple sources from different suppliers, the local WISP selected 4ipnet OWL800 QUAD as AP base station, providing a wide wireless coverage of 500m in radius, and OWL500/510 as CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), delivering last-mile broadband from the base station to commercial subscribers, for their highest data rate and best return on investment. “OWL800 QUAD brings all the benefits that a WISP would need such as 4 radios in 1 chassis, making it easy to manage and maintain 4 radios in one location,” said the President of the local WISP. “Also, the small equipment footprint had saved us lots of engineering work and expenses.” OWL800 QUAD and OWL500/510 outdoor devices are designed for long-life deployment in harsh environments, with IP68-certified metal housing that keeps them watertight, rust-resistant, and weather-proof. Complying with IEEE 802.11 standard and supporting WDS links with QoS and AES encryption for point-to-point application ensure reliable, secure and high quality wireless connectivity.
For authentication and bandwidth management, WHG701 Controller was implemented as subscriber gateway residing in the WISP’s data center, 10Km away from the center of Makati City. It is used for subscriber account management, user authentication and account billing. From the WHG701 in the data center, the WISP can centrally manage the bandwidth allowance (upper limit) of any remote subscriber’s CPE – OWL500/510 with QoS supporting feature to maintain excellent quality of voice and video streaming applications. "We are sure that we're running a good WISP business when those gateways in the data center or subscriber buildings provide excellent bandwidth management as we planned to. It gives us the capability to optimize our service network in good shape," noted the President of the WISP. In one sentence, the efficiency of bandwidth utilization for a WISP means the efficiency of money making.
For commercial subscribers, 4ipnet WLAN Controller WHG301 is installed at corporate offices and connects to OWL500/510 CPE as well as existing corporate ADSL line for dual-WAN internet redundancy and outbound load balancing of internet traffics. WHG301 serves as the corporate internal network controller for both wired and wireless network access and also supports staff/guest management with pre-configured policies. WHG301 is installed by the WISP in residential buildings to fine-tune and manage the subscribed wireless broadband service to tenants. It is also used to filter out most P2P traffics for better quality of service.
