The National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), the non-profit watchdog organization for the secure data destruction services industry, has announced that Iron Mountain Secure Shredding division has achieved NAID AAA Certification at all of its North American operations.
In commenting on the achievement, NAID Executive Director Robert Johnson stated, “We are proud to have such a highly regarded, international records management organization lend their credibility to our program. It is good to see that NAID AAA Certification continues to earn the acceptance of the industry and consumers as a way to verify that data destruction service providers meet a superior level of operational security.”
NAID AAA Certification is achieved and maintained through an ongoing series of announced and unannounced audits of service provider operations, including at their facilities and in the field. These inspections are conducted by trained, independent auditors, all of whom are accredited by ASIS International® as Certified Protection Professionals. Auditors verify the security of the applicant’s operations against a set of established specifications, including employee screening and monitoring, access control, written policies and procedures, and CCTV image capture. Currently there are over 700 NAID AAA Certified locations in North America, as well as a growing number around the world.
Johnson adds, “NAID AAA Certification provides a way for customers to fulfill the regulatory requirement to evaluate the qualifications of records destruction service providers. With Iron Mountain completing certification, NAID AAA Certification moves closer to becoming the default criteria for determining which shredding vendors are invited to compete for secure destruction opportunities,”
Data protection regulations in the United States and Canada, including HIPAA, GLB, FACTA, PIPEDA and PIPA, uniformly require organizations to have written criteria and a process for selecting service providers to whom they give access to customer information. NAID AAA Certification establishes that criteria and process, but also provides further security through regular audits, which are also generally required by the regulations.
Regarding the system of audits, Johnson goes on to say, “Audits are selected in a manner that means on any given day a NAID AAA Certified company might be inspected. We have literally had two separate audits of the same service provider on two consecutive days.”
