AmiCOUR IP Group today announced that it has been retained by Colorado based Sandwave IP, LLC to represent their US and International portfolio of issued and pending intellectual property relating to infrastructure, operation, and applications within networks offering wireless subscriber access. The multi-million dollar portfolio includes four US patents, one international patent (Canada), fourteen pending US applications, and ten pending international patents.
AmiCOUR IP’s announcement was timed with the anticipated FCC release of additional “white space” to facilitate the new “Super WiFi” services. White space is a term for unused portions of the radio spectrum allocated for public use by unlicensed consumer communications devices, for example between television broadcast frequencies. Older examples included cordless phones and baby monitors. New Super WiFi products should begin emerging within a year and promise seamless transparency between home and mobile communications devices. Internet service based on wireless solutions for the so called “last mile” connection to home or office will compete effectively with wired legacy equipment.
“This is an exceptionally compelling patent portfolio in the wireless space. Thirteen strategically developed groupings cover existing issues in wireless networks, facilitate the expansion of wireless networks as they become ubiquitous, and represent excellent opportunities for licensing, commercialization, and defensive holdings,” stated Tony Escobar, AmiCOUR IP Group’s Executive Vice President. “Our review team believes that some of the patents and pending applications may soon have broad applications related to building-out broadband linear networks using wireless service across longer distances. These technologies will compete with traditional cable and DSL internet providers. Patents in this portfolio may have immediate licensing value but also facilitate new choice and service options for consumers, dovetailing nicely with the FCC’s release.”
The IP portfolio includes a core wireless solution originally invented by MediaCell, Inc. of Highlands Ranch, CO, provider of the first “Wireless Tap”, offering computer users wireless access to a typical hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network branch. MediaCell applied for its first patent in 1999 claiming the “last mile” wireless connection between a subscriber residence and the broadband infrastructure. The novel approach solved two longstanding problems: the “last mile” physical wiring challenge and the need to isolate the network from the uncontrolled electrical noise sometimes found in homes or businesses. MediaCell ultimately developed a multitude of hardware and software infrastructure solutions to solve other industry problems with wireless technology and improve system performance, always with an eye toward anticipated future applications. A number of the ideas were successfully patented or filed as still-pending applications, now comprising the current portfolio offered by AmiCOUR IP. MediaCell’s IP assets were collectively assigned to, and are now owned by, Sandwave IP, LLC.
