This new version adds greenhouse gas emissions from fuel consumption and energy use breakdowns by energy type. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) has published footprints for 15 individual manufacturing sectors (representing 94% of all manufacturing energy use) and for the entire manufacturing sector, as shown in the included figures. Energetics will develop footprints for other sectors as needed through the use of a customizable analysis tool.
Published footprints include the following sectors: All Manufacturing; Alumina and Aluminum; Cement; Chemicals; Computers, Electronics, and Appliances; Fabricated Metals; Food and Beverage; Forest Products; Foundries; Glass; Iron and Steel; Machinery; Petroleum Refining; Textiles; and Transportation Equipment. All footprints are available for viewing at the ITP website.
The first step in achieving energy-efficiency goals is to identify how industry uses energy today. Questions to consider include: Where does it come from? What form is it in? Where is it used? How much is lost? The answers to these questions drive the footprint analysis process.
Energetics (energetics.com) developed the footprint tool to streamline the analysis of Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey data published by the Energy Information Administration. The resulting two-page footprint, shown here for All Manufacturing, gives analysts and decision makers a powerful visual and quantitative reference based on actual plant survey data. The footprints serve as guides for understanding the fuel use of energy and the associated greenhouse gas emissions, from supply of energy to its end use. The footprints also provide estimated energy losses which serve as a baseline from which to calculate the benefits of improved energy efficiency. An efficiency savings opportunity analysis will be published separate to the footprint analysis.
