EnerSys (NYSE: ENS) the world’s largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of stored energy solutions for industrial applications announced that it has been awarded a $10 million contract by the China State Nuclear Power Engineering Company, Ltd. for the supply of batteries for four reactors at two nuclear power plants, which are currently under construction in China.

These batteries, which are specifically certified for use in nuclear power plants, will be installed at the plants under construction in Sanmen, Shanzi province and Haiyang, Anhui province. The plants will utilize the Westinghouse AP 1000 third generation nuclear power technology and are the first of sixty reactors planned to be built in China utilizing this technology. Delivery of these batteries is scheduled for early 2011.

“This contract is significant for EnerSys.” said John D. Craig, chairman, president and chief executive officer of EnerSys. “These are the first of the planned sixty reactors utilizing this technology, which represents a potential $150 million in batteries for these facilities. The first of these batteries will be produced in our Hays, Kansas facility. However, we are planning future production of these batteries for the Chinese market to be in our new Chongqing, China plant, which is currently under construction.”
