Flipkart.com, India’s largest online book store today announced the launch of 3 new product categories, i.e. Movies, Music and Games. This is part of Flipkart’s expansion plans in the e-commerce space. Customers can now buy CDs & DVDs of Movies, Music and Games from Flipkart at discounts of up to 22 percent. The content largely includes English and Hindi titles and around 5 to 10 percent of regional titles. Flipkart’s range starts from Rs.30 onwards for video CD’s, Rs. 45 onwards for music and Rs. 199 onwards for games.

The Indian CD/DVD market was worth approximately Rs 10 billion in 2008 and is expected to grow to Rs. 16 billion by 2013 at an yearly growth rate of 10 to 15 percent. Flipkart expects to grow at faster than industry rates and plans to sell more than 3000 Movie/Music CD/DVDs per month initially and 20,000 CD/DVDs per month by the end of the year.

There are currently more than 20,000 movie titles listed on Flipkart and the list will grow to more than 30,000 titles by the end of this month. Movies include both English and Hindi titles and also popular titles from regional languages like Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, and several more.

The music catalogue includes 12,000 titles in Hindi, English, Vernacular and Instrumental music. Flipkart is working with all major labels including Moser Baer, T-Series, Big Video, Times Music, EMI and more. The games catalogue includes games for devices like PS, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox and PCs.

Announcing Flipkart’s foray into new categories, CEO Sachin Bansal said “the move to include Movies, Music and Games on the Flipkart menu is a definitive statement about our intent to be a major player in the e-commerce space in the country. Customers across the country can log on to flipkart.com and buy any of these products online using there credit/debit card, internet banking or cheque/demand draft. As in the case of books, any purchase above Rs. 100 will be delivered free of cost anywhere in India. The orders can also be tracked online and in case of difficulties customers have Flipkart’s customer support that is available 24x7.

Flipkart’s immediate plans include starting sales of software like Norton Anti-virus, Adobe, Windows, and others. There are also plans afoot to provide exclusive content at attractive prices, in the form of combo packs etc.
