On June 9, 2010, the City of Bell voted unanimously to address the need for a Regional Joint Powers Police Authority in Southeast Los Angeles County.

The recent financial crisis, coupled with the cost of operating a full service police department, has forced the City of Bell and the neighboring City of Maywood to reassess its’ policing efforts. As such, both cities have agreed it is in their mutual interest to work together to identify a long term and sustainable policing plan that will incorporate regional partners as well as foster the collaboration of other agencies.

“Both the City of Bell and Maywood agreed that The Joint Powers Police Authority is the best possible regional scenario to provide cost savings measures, better quality service and less duplication of policing efforts in our communities,” said City of Bell Chief of Police, Randy Adams. “We believe that our strategy is a sound economic move.”

Regional policing and joint regional services have long been a discussion in the Southeast area of Los Angeles. The recently adopted recommendation to address the need for a Joint Powers Police Authority will enable both the Cities of Bell and Maywood an opportunity to provide police services to the area.

“We look forward to collaborating with the City of Bell on this regional policing effort,” said City of Maywood Mayor, Ana Rosa Rizo. “More importantly, a regional policing authority reflects our continued commitment to provide quality and continued policing services to both our communities”.
