Boston, MA, United States, 2010/05/27 - Fusco & Four Modern, specializing in modernist 20th Century fine art since 1988, has recently been selected to represent the estate of mid-century sculptor Maxim M. Elias, and to represent his son, sculptor Max K. Elias.

These artists are an exciting and fitting addition to Fusco & Four Modern’s other 20th century offerings, which include works focusing on the Art Deco, Surrealist, and Modernist movements. More information can be found on the gallery’s website, FuscoFourModern.com.
Known primarily for his sharply geometric wooden sculptures, Maxim M. Elias (1916 – 1966) was widely exhibited and won numerous awards in the 1940s and 1950s. Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Maxim studied at the University of Kansas, the University of Iowa, and eventually at the Ruskin Drawing School at the University of London. He then went on to study with Heinz Warneke at the Corcoran Museum of Art, and taught throughout the Washing D.C. area. Notable exhibition venues include the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Obelisk Gallery.
One of the works being shown by Maxim is entitled “Four Pieces of Oak.” The piece won first prize winner for Best in Show in Sculpture at the Corcoran Museum of Art in 1948, and was judged by Alfred H. Barr, the first director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa).
Max K. Elias (b. 1940), the son of Maxim M. Elias, followed in his father’s footsteps as a sculptor. Whereas his father favored sculpting in wood, Max preferred sculpting in metal, often transforming single sheets of steel into complex sculptural animals, inspects, birds, and other figures. In addition to his vocational studies to develop his welding and sculpting skills, he studied at George Washington University and with Robert Gates at American University. He was widely exhibited throughout the country from the 1960s through the 1990s. Notable exhibitions venues include The Smithsonian/National Collection of Fine Arts in Washington DC, and the Couturier Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
