The central feature of SportsGrid is the Power Grid, which ranks players, coaches, teams and even beat writers spanning a variety of sports. By taking into account various metrics such as online search results, news mentions, TV air time, blog traffic, and Twitter followers the Power Grid takes an immediate snapshot of which sports personalities, teams, executives and broadcasters are generating the most buzz.
This grid is a souped-up version of the original algorithm, borrowed from mother-site Mediaite.com, and covers NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA Football and Basketball, NASCAR, Golf, and sports media. To ensure that a player's "on the field" performance is taken into account with the rankings, SportsGrid has partnered with fantasy sports statistics provider Rotowire, known for their proprietary and custom data services.
But the site is not just about the rankings. Like Mediaite, SportsGrid features a combination of original and aggregated content from across the sports culture spectrum. From the Tiger Woods scandal, to Butler's run to the Final Four, SportsGrid will cover the sports stories of the day written for fans looking to get past the predictable narratives in traditional sports outlets.
Managing Editor Colby Hall said: “What’s different about SportsGrid as compared to something like a Q Rating is that this is an objective look at what fans are doing and saying on the Internet about a sports personality at any given moment. The Power Grid is not an editorial pick. It’s not a focus group. It’s what the Internet is telling us about what people are searching about, who they are hyping up, what they are tweeting about. It’s really a fluid process.”
The launch of SportsGrid (SportsGrid.com) comes on the heels of the enormous successes of sister-sites Geekosytem and Styleite, which together with Mediaite are already hosting well over 4 million unique visitors per month after less than a year.
