Pianists Natalie Tsaldarakis and Panayotis Archontides, who make up the husband-and-wife piano team Ivory Duo Piano Ensemble, will present a recital for piano four-hands at the Jacqueline Du Pre Music Building in Oxford on May 29, 2010 at 7:30pm.The programme consists of two Sonatas by Mozart (in D, and in F), Brahms’ Hungarian Dances nos. 14-17, Ravel’s La Valse, and unusually their own arrangements of film music by Alex North, John Williams, and Miklos Rozsa.
The pianists, described in the media as exciting, brooding, and of international stature, formed the duo shortly after their marriage in 1994 and have since performed in Italy, Greece, Finland, Serbia, and the UK in such venues as St-Martin-in-the-Fields, St James Piccadilly, St John’s Smith Square, Reform Club, Blackheath Halls etc.
The uniqueness of the duo stems from the multitude of cultures that form integral part of the pianists’ background, and of course their varied, and sometimes clashing, musical interests. Natalie is Greek, born in Sweden, who has spent considerable part of her childhood in Italy and later in Greece and the US. On the other hand, Panayotis is a Greek-Australian born in South Africa, who spent his teenage years between Greece and Sydney, Australia. Panayotis also has extended family in the UK.
The balancing of their personal histories and cultures has led them to a highly eclectic approach to repertoire from Mozart to our days, juxtaposing canonical works with new music, world music, jazz, and music for films. In this last category, Panayotis provides the arrangements and Natalie is responsible for the editing. Their endeavours attracted the attention of the Bernard Hermann and Miklos Rozsa Societies in the US and the UK. The European Representative of the Miklos Rozsa Society, Mr. Alan Hamer, recently approached the pianists and inspired the new arrangement (Miklos Rozsa’s Lydia) to be premiered in Oxford.
