Abstract painter John Ross Palmer and mosaic artist Chris Silkwood have been selected for a collaborative art exhibit at the Nave Museum in Victoria, Texas during the Summer of 2010. Both residents of Houston's Historic Heights neighborhood, the pair will kick off the exhibit with a Houston unveiling on the evening of Friday, May 14, 2010, from 6:00 pm. to 9:00 pm. in the Upstairs Gallery at Winter Street Studios. John and Chris, both long-term and well-respected full-time artists, began collaborating about three years ago at the suggestion of Heights real estate mogul Bill Baldwin, not only a good friend but also a collector of both of their individual works. The resulting collaborative abstract plus mosaic masterpiece wowed not only Baldwin--but also Palmer, Silkwood and all of those who enjoyed its beauty. From this one-time project, a unique art alliance was born between Palmer & Silkwood. Their collaborations are immensely popular amongst well-known Houston collectors and therefore it is extremely exciting and with a great deal of pleasure that the artists will now show in Victoria in the Summer of 2010.
A lot of collectors are curious about the process. Palmer explains,
"Chris and I together gauge and decide the dimensions of the underlying piece of art, usually a wood box, panel or pedestal. Then, Chris uses her mosaic magic on the piece. Her art form is very time and labor intensive. It's not simple and easy to cut and perfectly apply those tiny mosaic tiles. After she is finished, she delivers the piece to me to complete. While my style blends almost seamlessly with Chris', my first step is to carefully outline her mosaic portions with a thick, blue adhesive so paint splatters don't wind up on her portion of the creation. Once I am finished painting, I remove the adhesive and share with Chris the resulting vibrant piece. Looking back, it always works like a charm. Both Chris and I operate in our own spheres of creation and then are both pleased with the way the styles complement one another."
Besides their friendship and drive for artistic success, Palmer and Silkwood share a bond related to giving back to the community. As a pair, the two Houston artists have donated many thousands of dollars to their local Houston Heights Association neighborhood civic group, with a special earmark towards the Heights Boulevard Beautification Project. In the wake of Hurricane Ike, the funds raised and donated by Palmer and Silkwood have helped immeasurably towards the re-building and beautification of their gorgeous historic neighborhood.
The cocktail reception and preview for their Nave Museum exhibit will take place at the museum in Victoria, Texas on the evening of Thursday, July 15, 2010. Their collaborative show which does also include their individual works will then be on display from July 16, 2010 to August 29, 2010.
