Northbrook, IL, United States, 2010/04/20 - An original "Emerald City resident" costume from the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, complete with Metro-Goldwyn Mayer tagging, is one of the top prizes in Universal Live Auction's April 25 sale.

A well-preserved green Emerald City jacket, as seen in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, will lead potential bidders down the Yellow Brick Road to a trove of Hollywood memorabilia in Universal Live Auctions’ April 25, 2010 online auction. The sale, which features an extensive selection of coveted entertainment memorabilia, also features prints and artwork from such 20th-century masters as Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso; as well as modern painters Peter Max, LeRoy Neiman, Marc Chagall and Al Hirschfeld.
Without question, the highlight of the auction is an original green jacket worn by one of the residents of the Emerald City in the film The Wizard of Oz. The green wool jacket, with cream-colored insert and teal green embroidered ribbon around the lapels, contains original Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer tagging and was originally purchased at an MGM studio auction three decades ago. It appears in the film during the scene in which Dorothy and her friends are welcomed into the Emerald City en route to their first meeting with the Wizard himself.
“We have only seen one other jacket from that movie come to auction,” said Marty Shape, the auctioneer for Universal Live Auctions. “This jacket in our auction is tagged inside with the number ‘42’ – meaning that whoever was cast member #42 in the movie wore that jacket in the Emerald City scene. Having this jacket as part of our auction is a great opportunity for us – The Wizard of Oz is one of the singular most popular movies of all time, and any memorabilia from that film is highly treasured among collectors.”
The likeness of another legendary Hollywood icon, actress Marilyn Monroe, is featured in a 20” x 20” acrylic on canvas artwork from artist Steve Kaufman (1960-2010). The artwork, authorized by the Estate of Marilyn Monroe, is signed by Kaufman in black marker on verso and is numbered #4 of 50 copies. Other Kaufman artworks offered by Universal Live Auctions include an artist-signed 28” x 36” silkscreen on canvas of James Dean, and a painting of Muhammad Ali on a set of boxing gloves, with the gloves signed by both Ali and Kaufman.
The auction also includes a stunning, colorful representation by painter Peter Max of the gramophone-shaped Grammy Award trophy. Max’s 1990 artwork, a 15 7/8” by 19 3/4” acrylic on canvas, is artist-signed on both the front and back. It was commissioned by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences as part of a series of Grammy-themed artworks.
Animation production cels – original hand-painted drawings – that appeared in such classic Walt Disney films as 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book – are also available for bid, as is a production cel featuring Donald Duck and his Brazilian best friend, the parrot Jose Carioca. After these production cels were used to make some of Walt Disney’s most famous films, the cels were often sold as souvenirs for a few dollars apiece at the Art Corner Shop, a Disneyland-based gift shop. Today, these one-of-a-kind artworks can sell for hundreds of dollars to animation and Disney collectors, and the value rises if the collector specializes in collecting a certain Disney character.
