Using e-mail addresses from different free e-mail providers such as Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail and Gmail, these scam artists employ several methods which include deceiving their targets into paying a sum of money to the courier services for PayPal to release their payments. The operation method was done by sending out e-mails claiming to be PayPal.
However, a check with PayPal has confirmed that the e-mails that were sent out to targets were fraudulent and that PayPal does not send out such emails.
On different occasions, they utilize other methods such as identifying themselves as marine engineers or evangelists and giving out legitimate addresses in United Kingdom and Singapore to buy off the trust of their targets. So far, their targets are the car owners who have listed up their cars for sale on popular car website.
Driving out the source of the scam, Business Development Director of SGCM Pte Ltd, Mr Vincent Tan said, “Our main priority is to inform the public of the situation. We don’t want our customers who post their cars online for sale to end up being cheated. We will also be sending out a warning advisory to our advertisers.”
As the risks of getting cheated are higher when transactions are done by means of transfer, there are several ways to overcome them.
“We have received several requests from our customers to advise them about the authenticity of these buyers. Our advice is always to meet up in person to close the sale transaction and always remember to ask for proper documentation. This allows both parties to verify one another. Furthermore, if sealing the transaction cannot be done by cash payments, be sure to get a cashier’s order (CO) to ensure that the cheque does not bounce,” Mr Vincent said.
