NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world announced today that Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), has selected NAVTEQ to power the Garmin nüvi 465T, an advanced GPS solution built specifically for truck-based navigation. To meet the particular needs of Australia’s commercial trucking industry, the Garmin nüvi 465T incorporates NAVTEQ Transport™, a specialized data set which is now available in Australia.
“Together with Garmin, NAVTEQ is delivering to Australia’s professional drivers the GPS functionality they demand,” says Brent Stafford, Business Development Manager, NAVTEQ. “Our research highlights a significant market need for map-based information that can help Australia’s truckers safely, and more efficiently, operate their vehicles.”
In addition to NAVTEQ Transport™ which is pre-loaded to the device, the Garmin nüvi 465T features a 4.3” high-resolution touchscreen display, voice-prompted directions and Bluetooth® wireless technology. The nüvi 465T also let’s drivers create custom vehicle profiles, which can be tailored to vehicle specifications and load restrictions. By utilizing the NAVTEQ map®, Garmin the global leader in satellite navigation, is able to provide truck drivers with a comprehensive GPS solution that combines device functionality with the highest quality map content. The result is a wide range of driver benefits – namely, safer and faster arrival to a destination.
NAVTEQ Transport™ incorporates over 20 truck-specific map attributes from across the region’s extensive road network. This includes the physical and legal restrictions that can often cause frustrations and inefficiencies for Australia’s commercial drivers while on the road. Bridge heights, weight restrictions, traffic signs, truck speed limits, hazardous material and preferred truck routes are amongst the data collected by NAVTEQ geographic analysts and verified for inclusion in the data set. These attributes are available for all the major highways throughout Australia, with additional coverage in Australia’s major metro areas.
In a NAVTEQ global survey of professional drivers, truck operators in Australia were found to be particularly time-conscious, noting efficient routing as one of their top priorities. Australian respondents also expressed interest in using a device that can provide timely driver warnings, such as bridge heights and school zone alerts, while en-route.
“With the Garmin nüvi 465T, Australia’s truckers can gain exclusive access to NAVTEQ map data that can help a driver navigate through often challenging situations, which a standard location-based device would not typically address,” added Stafford. “We believe that the Garmin nüvi 465T, while utilizing NAVTEQ’s Transport product, will have enormous impact on the industry.”
