Through the program, people may send Change the Balance their used retail gift card(s) with any remaining value. The organization will accumulate the gift cards received, and once there is enough value received for a particular retailer, a practical purchase will be made and the merchandise will be donated to a suitable local charity.

Established in 2007, Change the Balance is a non-profit organization whose vision is to capture abandoned gift card balances – estimated to be nearly $8 billion per year – and channel them to charity.

Change the Balance (changethebalance.org) will be publically marketed as offering consumers methods through which they may donate the balance remaining on gift card to a charity of their choice. These methods may include, but are not limited to, a donation portal on the web, free standing donation kiosks and integrated donation options in retailer point of sale systems.
