Ampac Flexibles, the flexible packaging division of Ampac Packaging LLC, is pleased to announce that their Tamaya Gourmet zippered, retort pouch with linear tear technology has won a Flexible Packaging Achievement Gold Award for Technical Innovation, and that Ampac’s new Vapur reusable water bottle achieved a Silver Award for Sustainability & Environmental Achievement.
Ampac Flexibles partnered with Tamaya Gourmet in 2009 to provide a more sustainable alternative for the company’s gourmet fruits packaged in glass jars. Tamaya Gourmet required 1) an easy-open feature to ensure customers did not have difficulty opening the pouch, 2) recloseability to allow storage of unused product, 3) excellent film clarity to highlight the fresh appearance of the fruit, and 4) high-quality, modern graphics to convey the premium quality of the product. Ampac Flexibles provided a recloseable standup retort pouch with rotogravure-printed graphics and incorporated Ampac Flexibles’ Linear Tear technology for straight and easy tearing of the pouch. The new pouches achieved all of Tamaya’s requirements and provided significant savings in shipping and storage weight while also minimizing product breakage.
Ampac Flexibles also worked with Vapur, Inc. to produce a high-quality, durable Reusable Flexible Water Bottle using an FDA-approved, BPA-free film. Unlike rigid water bottles that are full of air when empty, Vapur can be rolled, folded or flattened and tucked away. Vapur flexible bottles ship flat, so they take nearly 90% less space and use less fuel to transport than rigid water bottles. The pouches are designed to be filled at the source by the consumer rather than incurring the energy cost of shipping water in prefilled bottles. The bottles are reusable and are a sustainable improvement over one-time use water bottles that would either be landfilled or recycled after each use.
“The Tamaya pouch and Vapur bottles are great examples of innovative solutions that brought both technical advantages and sustainability into new package designs” says Sal Pellingra, Ampac Flexibles’ Marketing and Innovation Director. “By incorporating Linear Tear technology, a recloseable retort zipper, and most importantly, by helping Tamaya move from a glass jar with labels and a metal cap to one flexible pouch that reduced the packaging weight by over 90% - the Tamaya pouch was a home run all around! And the new Vapur bottle speaks for itself. The development of a repeated-use pouch was a departure from single-use packaging involving a more engineered structure that met Vapur’s goals to provide an environmentally-conscious, reusable flexible bottle that is refillable, BPA free, and easy-to-carry.”
