Morgan Philpot, a Former GOP state representative, will announce today that he is challenging incumbent Jim Matheson for the 2nd congressional seat. Philpot will make the announcement at the Capitol Board Room, in the Utah State Capitol Building at 5:00 pm.
“We have to reverse the pattern of spending and lack of fiscal discipline that Matheson has been party to,” said Morgan Philpot, former GOP state representative. “As Utah’s 2nd Congressional representative, I commit to working tirelessly to help not only stem this tide of irresponsible spending but work to also identify ways reverse it. This means we are going to have to make some tough choices that are not going to be popular with everyone.”
During his four-year tenure in the state legislature, Philpot was a leader in championing free market principles and in fighting against wasteful government spending. He also sought innovative ways to improve education, including being the lead sponsor of the Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship. Philpot’s service earned him the reputation of a principled leader who never shied away from taking a difficult stand when necessary.
In the wake of the growing national debt and repeated increases to the debt ceiling, Philpot said his campaign will also focus on reducing overreaching government regulations and mandates that helped fuel the current economic downturn and which continue to stifle economic growth.
“Our regulatory environment and these so-called jobs stimulus packages supported by Matheson treat people like the problem. As I’ve talked to people across the state, I can tell you that Utahns are not the problem; they are the solution,” said Philpot. “It’s time Utahns, in the 2nd Congressional district, were represented by someone with the leadership ability to help put people back in charge of their own lives and to allow them to use their own ingenuity and creativity to rebuild our economy.”
