Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, 2010/02/01 - The province of Alberta pavilion is set to show off Canadian design during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, as well as demonstrate functionality and eco-awareness.
Alberta House is nearly complete and ready to showcase the province for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Conceived by brand.LIVE with consultation from capsuledesigns as an architectural expression of Alberta's identity - the structure combines function, sustainability and innovative design.
Centrally located across from BC Place in Vancouver, the Alberta pavilion focuses on mainly local, recycled and recyclable materials. The concept of the facade revolves around two main materials including an unusual use of scaffolding. The scaffolding material is partially exposed and partially wrapped in polycarbonate sheeting, in the latter case the wrapping helps create heated air pockets to prevent snow accumulation if necessary. The second main material is precise cedar slatting – all locally sourced, fabricated off site, and fully recyclable after the Olympic period. Other eco-friendly elements include the paving made from recycled tires. Alberta House will also display home-grown talent in kinetic artwork, lighting, and design including such luminaries as Geoffrey Lilge.
Alberta House promises to be one of the highlights of the Olympics in terms of function as well as design. The province has assigned the pavilion for invited guests – a space for welcoming and networking as well as the promotion of Alberta industry, tourism, sport, culture and arts. The adjoining Alberta Plaza, which is a covered outdoor space, will be hosting concerts and events for the public including 40 of the province's musicians and artists. The plaza will also feature interactive screens to share information about the province with Olympic visitors.
