The annual award, presented by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA), recognizes international excellence in the creation and production of outstanding visitor experiences, attractions, and exhibits.
During the two-year project, History Associates (historyassociates.com) worked alongside a team of Bethel Woods developers, museum designers, period-content authorities, and film and interactive makers to create the museum storyline, write label text, and collect and license hundreds of historic images. The Thea Award committee commended The Museum at Bethel Woods for the high quality of its exhibits and noted its "expert use of a wide variety of exhibit tools and techniques by which visitors are drawn deep into the events." History Associates' researchers located both captivating imagery and compelling stories that, interpreted together, bring the festival to life and help visitors understand how the 1960s transformed America's cultural and political landscapes.
The Museum at Bethel Woods (bethelwoodscenter.org), which opened in June 2008, joins other distinguished Thea Award recipients including the International Spy Museum, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Walt Disney World, and the 2008 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies.
