The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently issued new quality standards to prevent fraud and promote quality care for Medicare recipients. The new Federal law that went into effect on October 1, 2009, requires suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) to periodically survey their patients to ensure quality service. In order to qualify for Medicare reimbursement, providers must receive accreditation from a recognized CMS authority such as CHAP (Community Health Accreditation Program) or JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations).
