We at the UB Group and Four Seasons (fourseasonsvineyards.com) are committed to growing the wine culture in India, and will continue to do so by offering quality wines at reasonable prices, and by engaging with the consumer through multiple and varied wine experiences.”
The Sommelier India Wine Competition (SIWC), which will be an annual feature, has been set up with the objective of providing an independent forum where domestic and imported wines available in India are judged and rated by an independent panel of wine experts, to serve as an unbiased guide for the Indian wine consumer and trade alike, on wine choices. The SIWC is chaired by Steven Spurrier, a world renowned wine expert and Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Japan Wine Challenge; and, co-chaired by Reva K Singh, editor and publisher of India’s first and only magazine dedicated to wine – Sommelier India. The competition attracted over 400 Indian and International wine entries from Indian wineries and Indian Wine Importers. The tasting and evaluation was held in the ‘blind format’, i.e., the label is not visible to the judge, ensuring that the judging is fair and unbiased in any way.
The distinguished panel of eighteen judges comprised, apart from Steven Spurrier, the most respected names in wine and hospitality business in India. The panel included Rahul Akerkar (Indigo restaurant), Gautam Anand (ITC Hotels), Aman Sharma (Taj Hotels), Craig Wedge (formerly with J W Marriott), and other wines professionals and experts like Vir Sanghvi, Magandeep Singh, David Banford, Sonal Holland, Alok Chandra and Harshal Shah.
“The Indian wine market is flooded with wine brands from all over the world and Indian consumers are looking for a voice that can guide them with their purchases. The Sommelier India Wine Competition gives the Indian consumer the power to make an informed decision,” said Steven Spurrier.
