2010 is fast approaching, and with it the 10th anniversary for international disaster relief organization ShelterBox.
Starting in January 2010 ShelterBox USA, based out of Lakewood Ranch, FL, will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary. To build an awareness and opportunity for people to participate, ShelterBox has created “Project 10” to start off a three year plan to raise 10 million dollars - to supply enough for 10,000 boxes and help 100,000 people.
Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter and dignity following over 100 disasters in more than 62 countries, bringing the organization to the forefront of international disaster relief. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. In many cases “ShelterBoxes” have made the difference between life and death.
ShelterBox (shelterboxusa.org) became well-established in the aid world following the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, for which it provided aid for 150,000 people. Major deployments since 2004 include Hurricane Katrina, the Pakistan and China earthquakes, and the Myanmar (Burma) cyclone.
Each “ShelterBox” supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.
